THE STORY

Circumstances of death

On June 27, 1985, police officers Peter Long and Brendan Flynn were in Ardee. As they approached the town's employment office, they came upon a robbery in progress. Two armed men had robbed the manager. When the robbers saw the patrol car, they fled the scene in the executive director's car, shooting at fellow officers. The colleagues took up the chase. The chase ended at Rathbrist Cross when the robbers, now on a motorcycle, collided with an approaching car. Sergeant Morrissey took up the pursuit alone on foot. As he caught up with them, a shot was fired and he fell to the ground, badly injured. One of the gunmen stood over him and fired at the sergeant at close range.
